The Fall of Simon Magus
c. 1461-2RCIN 403372
Prince Albert purchased this panel when the artist’s reputation was at its height. The sorcerer Simon launched himself from a tower in front of the emperor Nero, intending to prove his divine powers by ascending to heaven, but St Peter commanded the demons supporting him to let him fall. His dead figure lies prostrate in the centre foreground.
Purchased by Prince Albert in 1846
