Queen Victoria and Prince Albert first stayed at the sovereign’s Edinburgh residence in 1850, when the principal rooms were colourfully redecorated by David Ramsay Hay. The Gothic sideboard and chairs, made in Coburg by Hoffmeister and Behrens, were purchased at the Great Exhibition.
