At the Great Exhibition, this desk was praised for the quality of its carving, incorporating pursuits characteristic of the Canton of Berne, and the ingenious mechanism, allowing it to be used either standing or sitting. With their children in mind, the royal couple placed it in the Swiss Cottage at Osborne. 

Purchased by Queen Victoria in 1852
