The Queen and Prince Albert both enjoyed dancing and entertaining, and they held many balls at Buckingham Palace, which were attended by thousands of guests. Lami was a French artist who specialised in glamorous society scenes – Victoria and Albert knew of his work through a gift they received of an album including his watercolours.
