The son of Field Marshal the Earl Haig, whom he succeeded in 1928, Haig fought in the Second World War with the Royal Scots Greys. He was captured in 1942 at El Alamein. During the following years as a Prisoner of War, Haig occupied himself by drawing and painting. After the end of the war he returned to his home in Scotland and an exhibition of his work –the first of many – was held at the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh. Queen Elizabeth visited the exhibition, and Haig presented her with this watercolour of a band formed in a prison camp with instruments supplied by the Red Cross
