SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE (1769-1830)
Alexander I, Emperor of Russia (1777-1825)
1814-18RCIN 404942
Although briefly allied with France between 1807 and 1812, Alexander I was a determined opponent of Napoleon. He fought bravely against the French at Battle of Leipzig in 1813. Lawrence's portrait portrays
the Tsar as both a monarch and a solider. Wearing the uniform of a Russian Field-Marshal, he appears quiet and resolute against the dramatic sky filled with the smoke of battle.
