The young Prince of Orange spent much of his youth in Britain, where his family was exiled. As well as studying at the University of Oxford, he served in the British army, acting as aide-de-camp to Wellington in 1811. He was a popular figure with the British public, who nicknamed him ‘Slender Billy’. At Waterloo the Prince commanded some of the Dutch-Belgian troops and was wounded in the fighting.
