Table of the Great Commanders of Antiquity

1806-12

RCIN 2634

Constructed from porcelain, this remarkable table was commissioned by Napoleon. It shows Alexander the Great surrounded by the most renowned military leaders of the Classical period. It is no coincidence that the profile of Alexander closely resembles Napoleon himself. The table, a gift to the Prince Regent after the defeat of the Emperor, became one of his most treasured possessions and was shown in every official portrait thereafter.
