THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH (1727-88)
Trees beside a pond (recto); Study of a young woman, possibly Miss Lloyd of Ipswich (verso)
c. 1748 - c. 1750Black chalk | 35.3 x 32.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 931554
This drawing is one of several sheets where Gainsborough used both sides of the paper. One side shows a landscape study, with the burdock plants typical of the damp Suffolk countryside. On the other side of the sheet is a portrait study of a young woman. These two elements were combined in a painting of Miss Lloyd of Ipswich, now in the Kimbell Art Museum, Forth Worth, in which the young woman is depicted in a landscape setting.
