Lady Charlotte St Maur album
c. 1830-40Green velvet binding with gilt clasps and corner pieces, inset miniature on ivory in front board | 29.0 x 25.5 cm (whole object) | RCIN 970333
An album bound in green velvet with gilt clasps and corner pieces; with an inset miniature on ivory of figures threatening a lady with a small boy; containing drawings and watercolours (RCIN 931866-931934); stored in a green box.
Princess Victoria recorded the gift of this album in her Journal as ‘a beautiful album with a painting on it’ (24 May 1833). None of the pictures is by Lady Charlotte herself, who presumably gave the album to the Princess empty, to be filled by her as desired. Nearly half of the pictures later inserted in the album were by Princess Feodora of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, Queen Victoria’s half-sister; other notable contributors were Sir George Hayter (1792–1871) and Lady Waterford (1819–91).
