SIR BENJAMIN STONE (1838-1914)
Yeoman Warders outside the gates of the Tower of London
1898RCIN 2102201
Photograph of a group of eleven Yeoman Warders standing on the steps that lead to the gates of the Tower of London. They are holding ceremonial spears and are shown from a frontal viewpoint, facing the viewer.
The Yeomen Warders are ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London. They are responsible for looking after prisoners in the Tower and safeguarding the British crown jewels and they are also perceived as a tourist attraction in their own right. While their role is usually confined to the Tower of London, the Yeomen Warders do take part in one State ceremony: at Coronations they form a guard of honour inside the annexe at Westminster Abbey.
