KIRIBATI

Fan

third quarter 20th century

RCIN 69695

Finely plaited fans were first made in Kiribati and other Micronesian islands using strands of coconut fibre. Today, raffia is often used instead. Colourful feathers are added for decorative purposes. The woven designs demonstrate the finest weaving traditions handed down by the islanders.

This fan was likely presented to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, during his visit to the islands in 1959.
