President Jiang Zemin was the first President of the People's Republic of China to visit Britain. His trip in October 1999 sought to strengthen economic ties and encourage scientific and technical co-operation between China and the United Kingdom. Symbolic of these technological aims is this armillary sphere supported by four dragons which President Jiang presented to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
