KIM SE-YONG (B.1946)

Vase

1999

RCIN 74658

Celadon is a distinctive green-glazed ceramic originally from China. During the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392), celadon was the main type of ceramic made on the Korean peninsula. The colour is the result of iron in the clay, and of iron oxide, manganese oxide and quartz particles in the glaze.

This vase was made by Kim Se-Yong (b.1946), who was designated a Korean Master Craftsman for Ceramics in 2002. Dozens of pierced and carved chrysanthemum flowers signify long life, because they bloom for an extended period each year.

Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by the citizens and Mayor of Andong, Jung Dong-ho, during her visit to Hahoe village in Andong Province during the State Visit to South Korea, 1999.
