This ebony staff is deeply carved and inlaid with mother-of-pearl in a design of three stylised figures standing one on top of the other. In the Trobriand Islands of Papua New Guinea, their use is reserved for great chiefs. Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by the Prime Minster of Papua New Guinea at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Durban, South Africa, November 1999.
