Elephant
c. 1900RCIN 40048
The elephant was one of Fabergé's most popular and often repeated animals; the Royal Collection alone contains 49 examples and at least six of these are carved from nephrite.
Bainbridge noted that Fabergé exaggerated particular characteristics of animals. For elephants, he played upon their bulk, reducing the length of the back and 'pushed them together concertina fashion' to make them even more appealing.
