Fabric 'housewife'

1915

RCIN 74637

On Easter Sunday 1915, King Albert and Queen Elisabeth of the Belgians presented a fabric 'housewife' to 110,000 serving members of the Belgian armed forces. The 'housewives' contained all the implements needed for mending a uniform along with a notebook and pencil.

This linen, khaki coloured, folding pouch, contains a comb, pins, buttons, thread, laces, notebook, pencil, and wool; the interior maintains a red/pink colour , although the exterior has faded. It is printed on the outside with the signatures of the King and Queen of the Belgians, Albert and Elisabeth, 4 Avril 1915.
