Helmet
1914-18RCIN 69443
In early 1916, the 'coal scuttle' helmet was introduced in response to the high number of head wounds experienced by soldiers. In addition to its steel form that could protect the soldier's neck and ears, it was originally issued with a plate across the front. However, this was quickly deemed impractical for mobility and ventilation and was thus only used by sedentary soldiers such as snipers.
