Medal commemorating the Battle of Jutland.
1916RCIN 443644
The Battle of Jutland took place between the British Royal Navy and the German High Seas Fleet on 31 May 1916. This medal was struck immediately after the battle, before the engagement had even been formally named. Both sides suffered heavy losses yet both were eager to claim it as their victory. Commemorative medals often provided an opportunity to dictate historical record.
