Postcard of Paris
12 May 1896RCIN 2118593
Postcard of Paris, showing the Eiffel Tower. The card was sent to Prince Edward of York, later King Edward VIII, by his parents the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George V and Queen Mary. The Prince was not even two years old at the time. The message reads: 'The top of this 12 May 1896. My dear David. Hope you & little baby are quite well. We shall see you very soon. A kiss from dear Papa & Mama'.
Sending postcards from the top of the Eiffel Tower was first introduced at the Paris Exhibition of 1889, marking the beginning of the Edwardian craze of sending postcards from the tops of monuments and mountains.
