HARRY G THEAKER (1873-1954)
A summer night
c.1923RCIN 927419
A miniature watercolour of a crepuscualr or nocturnal scene, with a young woman standing by a low wall; with what may be a fan in her left hand. Signed, lower right.
The influence of the works of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood is apparent in this watercolour by illustrator Harry George Theaker. There had been a revival of interest in this Victorian movement ever since the retrospective exhibition of the work of John Everett Millais, at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1886. During the 1920s and 1930s Theaker produced illustrations for books including The Adventures of Don Quixote, Gulliver's Travels, The Water Babies, and Grimm's Fairy Tales.
