HUBERT LE SUEUR (C. 1580-1658)

Borghese Gladiator

circa

RCIN 71436

The East Terrace Garden provides the setting for four bronze figures by the French sculptor Hubert Le Sueur, cast for Charles I. Possibly the most recognisable of these, the Borghese Gladiator, is shown here, his left arm outstretched, a sword at the ready in his right hand. The cast is a reproduction of the ancient statue discovered in Rome in 1611 and now in the Louvre, Paris. George IV had the figures brought to Windsor in 1829 for his new garden.
