Medal commemorating the visit of King George IV to Ireland
1821RCIN 443322
Commemorative medals have been struck to mark royal visits in Britain and overseas for centuries, including up to the present reign. This silver medal records the visit of George IV to Ireland after his coronation in July 1821. Following celebrations in London, the King embarked on a series of journeys to each of his outlying kingdoms, going first to Dublin in August. The reverse of this medal shows the King arriving by boat and greeted by Hibernia, the classical personification of the Irish. She has an Irish wolf hound at her feet and to her right a harp, which has long featured on the arms of Ireland. Immediately after the visit, George IV undertook his first and only foreign trip, to Hanover, where he was crowned King of Hanover in a second coronation ceremony.
