SIR EDWIN LUTYENS

Dolls’ House letter from Sir Edwin Lutyens

Queen Mary was a great collector and purchased many items for the Royal Collection. The most striking item associated with her – Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House – was presented to Queen Mary as a tribute. Princess Marie Louise, one of Queen Victoria’s granddaughters, first came up with the idea, and brought it to fruition.

She commissioned Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869–1944) to design the dolls’ house, numerous artists and writers to produce works for its library and walls, and many firms to make miniature versions of their products, ensuring it was fully equipped in the style of a great country house. This letter between Lutyens and Princess Marie Louise shows a charming sketch of a soldier and highlights the princess’s involvement in the process of creating the wonder that is Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House.
