ATTRIBUTED TO ARTIST AND WORKSHOP OF DIEGO DE VELAZQUEZ (1599-1660)

Isabella of Bourbon (1602-1644), consort of Philip IV of Spain (1605-1665)

c.1635-38

RCIN 402915

This full-length portrait of Isabella of Bourbon, the first wife of Philip IV of Spain, is one of the few contemporary paintings of the queen. She was notoriously reluctant to sit for artists. The small black and white King Charles Spaniel at the feet of the queen is a traditional symbol of fidelity.
