By the 1770s, a bindery had been established in rooms below the library at Buckingham House. This formed the origins of the present Royal Bindery, now at Windsor Castle.
The binders bound books for the library and were on hand to make necessary repairs. They appear to have chosen a modest style, opting for simple leather-bound volumes, often with the king’s cypher or arms on the boards. Many of the tools used by the bindery in the reign of George III remain in use in the Royal Bindery today.
