The Prince purchased this gold bangle from a peddler during his stay in Trichinopoly. Such peddlers, referred to as boxwallah in William Howard Russell's diary, were a frequent sight throughout the tour. On 12 December Russell recorded that after Sunday service 'came irruptions of workers in gold and silver, in brass and ebony, and in all the things for which Trichinopoly is famous. There was no more peace, but there was much bargaining for bangles and jewellery'. This bangle was later presented by the Prince to Queen Victoria for her birthday.
