The Prince of Wales's Tour of India in 1875-6
Albert Edward's tour aimed to strengthen ties between the two countries
Crown
c.1875RCIN 11358
This European-style crown was presented to the Prince of Wales by the Taluqdars of Awadh at Kaiserbagh. Crowns had been adopted instead of the usual turban ornaments by the Kings of Awadh to set apart their kingdom from that of the Mughals, which they had previously served until 1819. In 1856, the British Government deposed King Wajid Ali Shah of Awadh and annexed his kingdom. The Taluqdars, traditional landowners, benefited from this act and the presentation of this gift to the Prince was a symbol of their allegiance to the British Crown.
