Detail from a map of India and the Middle East, showing the route of the Prince of Wales' tour
The Prince of Wales's Tour of India in 1875-6

Albert Edward's tour aimed to strengthen ties between the two countries

SYDNEY PRIOR HALL (1842-1922)

Landing at the dockyard, Bombay

c.1876

RCIN 923295

This watercolour shows the Prince emerging from the Royal Barge at Colaba. As he took his first steps in India, he was greeted by the people of Bombay, which Russell described as ‘glittering with gems’.

Cities and towns that the Prince visited as part of his tour were all lavishly decorated to welcome him. In Bombay, a vast triumphal arch was erected. This was decorated with banners and palm- and coconut-tree branches and leaves.
