24 December 1875RCIN 923332
The Prince met with several Indian rulers at Government House, in Calcutta. Here the Prince sits with Sultana Jehan, the Begum of Bhopal, who is wearing a veil. Bhopal was unique among the Indian princely states in that it was ruled by a succession of widows who governed with the consent of their people and the British Government. Bartle Frere and Dighton Probyn are on the left with the Begum’s daughter. One of the Begum’s nephews and an interpreter, are seated on the right.
