George Washington Wilson produced some of the first photographic souvenirs of Scotland

GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823–93)

Fingal's Cave, looking in

1859

Stereoscopic albumen print | 7.5 x 7.1 cm (image) | RCIN 2514414

Wilson took this closer look into the mouth of the cave. It would have required great skill on the part of the photographer to capture this view. Wilson probably stood on a slippery plateau in front of the cave to capture the image or he may have been on board a boat. In the same year that this photograph was taken, Wilson was one of the first photographers to take a photograph from the deck of a ship when he photographed HMS Edgar from the deck of HMS Trafalgar, which was anchored in the Firth of Forth.
