Parade shield ('The Cellini Shield')
mid-sixteenth centuryRCIN 62978
This parade shield acquired by George III was described by Horace Walpole as 'superbly executed by Cellini'. In the nineteenth century, the shield was placed in a prominent position on the chimneypiece of the Queen's Guard Chamber in Windsor Castle, in a rotating mount, so that viewers could examine closely the workmanship of the master. The shield has since been attributed to Eliseus Libaerts.
