GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

The Ballroom, Balmoral Castle

1866

RCIN 2333851

Photograph of the Ballroom inside Balmoral Castle. A wooden staircase leads up to a doorway on the far side of the room and the walls are hung with antlers. Three chandeliers hang from the wood panelled ceilings.

From a series of photographs taken of Balmoral Castle in 1866 that were intended for public consumption. By the mid 1860's, Wilson was taking a more commercial stance with his photography and re-photographing the places and landscapes that he knew would appeal to the general public. The series on Balmoral were no exception. A book titled Balmoral and that was illustrated using Wilson's photographs of the castle was published in 1866.
