Highland Dirk and scabbard with by-knife and fork (RCIN 29023)©

We are delighted to continue our partnership with the Royal School of Needlework with this exclusive hand embroidery class inspired by the acclaimed exhibition, Style & Society: Dressing the Georgians at The King’s Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse.

RSN Tutor, Helen McCook has created this stunning thistle design inspired by the portrait of George IV wearing full Highland dress (painted by Edinburgh-trained artist Sir David Wilkie) as well as the engraved patterns on the accoutrements which the King wore, made by George Hunter of Prince’s Street, Edinburgh. Helen has utilised golden and coloured metal threads plus diamanté to emulate the engravings of the metal dirk and sword.

During your class you will work onto tartan silk dupion using couched Japanese, rococo and passing, over stretched pearl purl, sequins, round and shaped diamanté, s-ing, chain stitch and feather stitch in cut metal threads. This class is suitable for all levels of skill and your kit will contain everything you need to complete the design at home. You may like to bring your own magnifiers (battery operated only please), but you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day. Please do not bring your own scissors.

The income from your ticket contributes directly to The Royal Collection Trust, a registered charity. The aims of The Royal Collection Trust are the care and conservation of the Royal Collection, and the promotion of access and enjoyment through exhibitions, publications, loans and educational activities.
