Podcast - Precursors to the Prince: the grand tour in the Ottoman Empire

transcript_precursor.pdf

Although Edward Prince of Wales’ tour of the Middle East was diplomatically convenient at that time, it actually followed an established pattern. Since the Ottoman Empire was an ally and travel there relatively safe, the British often extended their Grand Tour far into the east. They included people as diverse as poets such as Lord Byron and politicians like Benjamin Disraeli. But what were their aims and motivations in going? Enjoy a podcast of Dr Philip Mansel, historian and author of Constantinople and Levant lecture to find out.
