Conserving Maratti's 'The Annunciation'

Treatment was needed before the First Georgians exhibition

3D scanning and printing for conservation

A long-term solution was required for the problem of how to handle the painting in and out of the frame whilst avoiding flexing the copper panel support.

The painting was scanned three-dimensionally by a team from Factum Foundation to make a high resolution recording of its surface and shape.

This information was taken to create an exact negative impression of the back of the panel.

The negative was used to design a tray to accurately support the painting at all points and drastically minimise the risk of raised paint and loss in the future.
