HRH Princess Elizabeth of York aged five weeks, May 1926
May 1926RCIN 2999931
In May 1926, Richard N. Speaight (1875 -1938), a society photographer, was asked by the Duke of York (later King George VI) to take the first photographs of his newborn daughter, Princess Elizabeth. This commission must have been particularly pleasing, as Speaight had photographed – on different occasions – both the Duke and the Duchess of York themselves as children. A hand-coloured photograph of Princess Elizabeth with the Duchess of York, taken on the same occasion, is shown.
