Podcast: Archaeology Among the Ruins

The photographer Francis Bedford accompanied the Prince of Wales on his tour of the East in 1862.

Although Bedford's work fitted into a long western tradition of picturing the 'Orient', during this period photography was becoming increasingly respected as a 'science'.

Using Bedford's later studies of antiquities, Dr Amara Thornton, UCL and Dr Debbie Challis, Petrie Museum, UCL, explore the effect photography had on another emerging science; archaeology.
