The large mortuary temple for Ramesses III was directly connected with the royal palace as part of a vast complex which would have housed many people. The surviving ruins suggest that it was fortified – this gateway would have been the main entrance for the entire complex, and it shows features commonly found in fortresses of this period.
Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
