EGYPT
Queen Senet, XII Dynasty (c.1985-1785 BC)
c.1985-1785 BCRCIN 7817
Senet was the consort and mother of two as yet unidentified pharaohs of the XII Dynasty. The two identical inscriptions, on either side of her feet, read: ‘An offering which the king gives, [consisting of] a voice-offering of bread, beer, oxen and fowl for the ka [spirit] of the Hereditary Princess, King’s Wife, King’s Mother Senet, true of voice’. This is a standard form of words to provide the spirit of the individual with nourishment. The face, damaged in antiquity, was partially remodelled in the nineteenth century.
