The Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was said to have straddled the entrance to the harbour into Rhodes Town. The Colossus was a statue of the Titan Helios, standing at about 30m (107ft) high. It was constructed to commemorate an unsuccessful siege of the island in 305 BC.
