The Prince of Wales with companions, Cairo

The leading French photographer Gustave Le Grey was living in Egypt at the time of the Prince’s visit. He met the royal party in Cairo and took the opportunity to photograph the Prince (seated back right) with his companions. The Prince recorded the meeting in his journal, ‘After luncheon we were photographed, by M. Le Grey, a French photographer, who also went up the Nile with us.’ Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
