Colonnade of Isis headed columns in the Great Court of the Temple of Isis [Philae]

13 Mar 1862

RCIN 2700871

The royal party travelled along the Nile as far as Aswan without stopping at any of the major sites. They then turned around, and began a much slower progression back up to Cairo. Philae was the first temple complex visited by the Prince, who described the ruins as ‘beautiful and most interesting’. The temple complex was situated on an island which the royal party reached on horseback. Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
