FRANCESCO ZUCCARELLI (PITIGLIANO 1702-FLORENCE 1788)

Landscape with Diana appearing to Endymion

c.1740-45

RCIN 400531

On one of her journeys Diana, known as Selene in Greek mythology, sees the beautiful sleeping Endymion and falls in love with him. Endymion is granted perpetual sleep, in which he will neither grow old nor die, and Diana can visit him at night and gaze upon his beauty. In this pair of paintings on panel Zuccarelli creates entire mythological worlds on a small scale.
