MARCO RICCI (BELLUNO 1676-VENICE 1730)
Landscape with a Woman and Child
c.1725-30RCIN 406989
Part of a set of four late works, this painting is Marco’s highest achievement in landscape painting. For Marco Ricci the mountainous countryside around his home town of Belluno in the Dolomites was a source of inspiration throughout his life. Marco captures the real effects of light, the weather and the seasons. Yet the compositions are also carefully composed so that the viewer is led on a journey through an idealised landscape. Marco’s attention to the effects of light was highly influential on the younger Canaletto. Throughout his career Marco collaborated with his uncle Sebastiano, providing landscapes and settings while Sebastiano contributed some figures to his nephew's work as in this painting.
