FRANCESCO ZUCCARELLI (PITIGLIANO 1702-FLORENCE 1788)

River Landscape with Apollo Pursuing Daphne

c.1740-45

RCIN 400530

In Ovid's Metamorphoses Apollo's love for Daphne was not reciprocated. She had pleaded with her father to let her remain a virgin forever, like Diana, the goddess of chastity. As Apollo pursues her she looks imploringly up at Diana, her hands already changing into the branches and leaves of a laurel tree.
