CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Venice: The crossing of San Marco, looking north

c.1735

RCIN 907430

Interior views by Canaletto are rare, and his few drawings of interiors are all of San Marco. This is a view from the south transept, looking north. Strong daylight from the main doors of the basilica illuminates the worshippers and the two polygonal pulpits, with the rood screen surmounted by statues running between them. The scene may be the traditional appearance of the Doge in the south pulpit following his coronation in the sanctuary of the basilica.
