CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Venice: The lower bend of the Grand Canal, looking north-west

c.1734

RCIN 907474

The view corresponds with that from the modern Accademia bridge. In the left foreground is Palazzo Contarini degli Scrigni. In the distance, as the canal turns to the right, is Ca’Rezzonico with a pitched roof, prominent in the foreground of the following drawing. To the right are the low buildings gathered around Campo San Vidal, the site of the Stonemasons’ Yard in the National Gallery, London, the masterpiece of Canaletto’s early period.
