CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Venice: The upper reach of the Grand Canal, looking south

c.1734

RCIN 907473

The view is taken from the upper end of the Grand Canal, looking south towards the sharp bend by Santa Croce. At the left of the composition is the church of Santa Croce, whose façade is seen frontally (without the two arched windows above the lateral doors) in the drawing above. Few of the buildings survive today, and the vaporetto stop serving the Piazzale Roma car park now lies in the right foreground.
