PAUL SANDBY (1731-1809)
The Norman Gateway and Moat Garden, Windsor Castle
c. 1770RCIN 914535
The sheltered area in the dry moat surrounding the Round Tower is still used today as a garden. Sandby chose a low viewpoint, contrasting the imposing towers of the Norman Gate with the solitary boy watering the roses. At this date the house in the background belonged to the Castle Housekeeper. Its fashionable eighteenth-century façade was later removed.
